Israel has launched a retaliatory strike against Iran with explosions reported near a military base early on Friday morning.
Western officials told US media Israel had launched missiles, while Iran said it shot down drones around the Isfahan air base close to a major nuclear facility.
Local sources suggested that three explosions occurred near the air force base, according to the Fars news agency, although authorities have not clarified what caused it.
An Iranian official claimed the explosions were a result of Iran’s air defence systems being activated, adding no missile attack had been carried out against Iran.
White House and Pentagon officials are understood to be closely monitoring the situation as reports emerged around 5.10am local time in Iran on Friday (2.40am GMT).
